Firefly — Privacy Policy
Firefly is made by Zehon. This policy explains, in plain terms, what the app does and does not do with your information.
The short version
Firefly is for parents and caregivers of toddlers. Everything about your child stays on your phone. Their name, your notes, your weekly plan and your check-in answers are stored on your device and are never transmitted to us or to anyone else.
The only information that ever leaves your device is anonymous usage data about how the app itself is used, and only if you say yes when we ask.
What stays on your device, always
Stored locally in the app's own database, and never uploaded:
- Your child's name or nickname, and their age range
- The focus areas you chose
- Every note and observation you record, including anything you type
- Your weekly plan and your favourites
- All of your check-in answers, and any reflection generated from them
Deleting Firefly deletes all of it. We cannot recover it, because we never had it. If you want a copy, the app can export your notes as a PDF or spreadsheet directly from your device (Settings → Share with a professional); that export is created on your phone and shared only by you, to whomever you choose.
What we collect, and only with your consent
When you first set up Firefly we ask a single question: whether we may collect anonymous usage data. If you decline, nothing is collected, and we do not ask again. You can change the answer at any time in Settings → Anonymous usage data.
If you agree, the app sends a fixed list of usage events — things like which activity was opened, roughly how long a visit lasted, and whether a note was saved. The complete list, in plain language, is published inside the app (Settings → See exactly what's collected) and at zehon.com/firefly/data-collected. That list is generated from the app's source code and our build fails if it ever stops matching what the code actually sends.
Never collected
- Your child's name, or any name
- The text of any note you write
- Any answer you give in the check-in
- Any score, result, or assessment — Firefly does not compute one
- Your email, phone number, contacts, photos, or location
- Your device's advertising identifier. Firefly does not track you across apps or websites.
- Screen recordings. Session replay is switched off, permanently.
Amounts are always ranges
Where an event mentions an amount — how long a visit lasted, how many notes you exported — it is sent as a range such as "1–3m" or "6-20", never an exact figure. An exact count of a child's activity is more identifying than it looks.
How events are tied together
Usage events carry a random identifier created on your device the first time you agree to collection. It is not your Apple ID, not your device's advertising identifier, and is not derived from anything about you or your phone. Deleting the app deletes it, and reinstalling creates a new one.
Who else sees it
If you consent, usage events are processed by PostHog (United States) on our behalf. PostHog is a data processor: it stores and charts the events for us, does not sell data, and does not operate an advertising business. Because nothing about your child is included in those events, nothing about your child reaches them either.
We do not sell your information, and we never will. We do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or any other third party.
Your rights
Wherever you live, and regardless of what any law requires of us:
- Withdraw consent at any time in Settings. Collection stops immediately.
- Delete everything by deleting the app. Nothing about your child survives it anywhere.
- Ask us what we hold. If you have consented, that is the events in the published list, tied to a random identifier. If you have not, it is nothing.
Residents of Washington State: this app is designed against the Washington My Health My Data Act. Consent to collect is opt-in and specific, we do not share consumer health data, and we do not sell it under any circumstances.
Children
Firefly is designed for a parent or caregiver to use, not a child. We do not knowingly collect information from children. Information a parent records about their child stays on the parent's device.
What Firefly is not
Firefly is an educational companion for families. It does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, screening, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for care from qualified professionals.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we will say so in the app before the change takes effect. Consent already given will not be reinterpreted to cover something new.
